Embracing Cultural Diversity
To enhance learning and teaching
Welcome to the Cultural Diversity section of the Learning & Teaching @ UNSW website. Cultural diversity is a defining feature of the landscape at UNSW. In 2008, one in every two students at UNSW was born outside of Australia and approximately one in every five students was an international student (9,269 in total). Cultural diversity is also a hallmark of the staff profile. In 2008, more than one-quarter of academic staff were born outside of Australia and over 10 percent had non-English speaking backgrounds.
UNSW is strongly committed to providing an international education. Accordingly, in its Statement of Strategic Intent B2B Blueprint to Beyond 2010 the University sets out its overarching objectives and strategies for its major areas of activity. In relation to the Student Experience it invokes the concept of "global citizen" as a value to uphold.
This section of the website summarises the University's objectives in this area as they relate to learning and teaching; outlines strategies for culturally inclusive learning and teaching and professional development; provides information for academics of non-English speaking backgrounds; and provides a comprehensive cultural diversity and inclusive practice toolkit, helpful resources and external links.
