Contract and Payment Processes
Your School is responsible for providing you with a written contract of employment if you are employed for more than 4 weeks.
In order to receive your first pay, you will need to complete the necessary forms, all of which will be provided by your supervisor or your School contact person. These will include:
You will be paid every fortnight by Electronic Funds Transfer into your nominated bank account.
Sessional teaching staff will receive their first pay 2 weeks after they have lodged their first claim.
The procedure for organising payment may vary according to the School in which you are employed. However, most Schools follow a similar procedure to that detailed above.
Visit the Human Resources website, www.hr.unsw.edu.au/services/salaries/casacsal.html for further detail on salary rates for sessional teaching staff.
As set out in Schedule 2 of the UNSW (Academic Staff) Enterprise 2006 Agreement (www.hr.unsw.edu.au/services/indrel/acadea2006.pdf) your hourly rate of pay for lecturing or tutoring includes:
Marking beyond this, including marking of subject or course wide examinations, essays or other assessment tasks will be paid at the appropriate hourly marking rate as set out in Schedule 2 [Section 4] http://www.hr.unsw.edu.au/services/salaries/casacsal.html
If you have any queries in relation to the marking component of your contract, you should see your course coordinator or supervisor.
Further information on casual employment at UNSW can be found in Section 15.3 of the UNSW (Academic Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2006. (http://www.hr.unsw.edu.au/services/indrel/acadea2006.pdf)
Sessional teaching staff do not accrue entitlements to recreation leave, sick leave or other paid leave. As a casual academic, your pay includes a loading in lieu of any leave entitlements.
You are only paid for public holidays on which you are required to work. If you are not required to work, you are not paid for the day.
All sessional teaching staff at UNSW receive superannuation payments from the University, and all payments are made quarterly into UniSuper fund.
The University will contribute 9% of your salary if you earn over $450 a month, while if you earn less than $450 the rate drops to 3% of your salary.
If the total amount of superannuation you accrue over a quarter is less than $31.50, the University is not obliged to make any payment on your behalf.
Sessional teaching staff are covered by the University's workers compensation insurance during the period of their contract. If you have an accident while working, you need to lodge an Incident Report Form with your supervisor/school contact person, which you can download from http://www.hr.unsw.edu.au/ohswc/Workerscomp.html
