A learning and teaching induction resource is now available to all new and continuing academic staff:
Support for new teaching staff
A very warm welcome to the beginning of your learning and teaching career at the University of New South Wales. We hope that it will be an exciting and rewarding time for you. UNSW offers a richly diverse learning and teaching environment and you will encounter this diversity in the many disciplines offered at UNSW as well as in your students. Increasingly, academic and non-academic staff at UNSW are coming together to share their diverse perspectives and to form cross-disciplinary learning and teaching communities based on common interests. You can engage in these communities in many ways - for example, through the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) program, the UNSW Network in Learning and Teaching (UNILT) program, and the annual Learning and Teaching Awards program.
One of the rewards of teaching at a research-led institution such as UNSW is the potential for linking your teaching and research and for engaging in the scholarship of learning and teaching. However, balancing teaching, research and administration can also be a significant challenge, and this resource suggests a number of ways to work towards managing the various aspects of your new role. Overall, staff interested in learning and teaching are increasingly supported at UNSW. Mentoring programs for new academic staff at UNSW are becoming more common, and we encourage you to find out if mentoring is available in your School or Faculty to support you in these early stages.
We look forward to welcoming you to Learning & Teaching @ UNSW through participation in any of our community networks, programs and/or events. We encourage you to participate in the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching Program (FULT) as this will provide you with a comprehensive start to learning and teaching. We wish you all the very best for your teaching career at UNSW.
Please feel free to drop by at L&T@UNSW and say hello. You are very welcome to borrow from our library on learning and teaching in the L&T Commons which is a space available for all staff to use for conversations with colleagues and quiet reflection.
Apart from the support material for teachers in our Teaching @ UNSW pages, here are some additional resources to support you in your First Year of Teaching @ UNSW
Alternatively, you can go to Getting started for an introduction to what you might expect in the first couple of years. You can read more about the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching program, which is designed to introduce you to the practice and theory of learning and teaching at the tertiary level. You might find it helpful to access some relevant policies and documents, and there are many services at the university that can offer you individual support. Finally, you might wish to access some additional resources and links.
